Tour overview
Climb the Maasai 'Mountain of God' by starlight and wake to a sea of flamingos.
Ol Doinyo Lengai – 'the Mountain of God' in the Maasai language – is an active volcano estimated to be 350,000–400,000 years old, one of the youngest and most active in East Africa. Its eruptions were first documented in 1883 by Dr Fischer, the first European to pass through this part of Maasailand. It is the only known active volcano to produce carbonatite lava, which contains almost no silicon, erupts at around 510°C – about half the temperature of other lavas – and is as fluid as water.
The mountain can be climbed by reasonably fit and agile travellers. The trail to the top is very steep, and the descent can be hard on knees and ankles. Climbs usually begin from the campgrounds around Lake Natron and take 5–6 hours up and 2–3 hours down; daytime heat makes the slopes harsh, so we climb by night and you should carry plenty of water. The volcano is unpredictable, so caution is essential.
Lake Natron is a salt and soda lake in Tanzania's Gregory Rift, the eastern branch of the East African Rift, close to the Kenyan border. Lying at about 600 m, it is around 57 km long and 22 km wide, less than 3 m deep, and covers some 1,040 km². It is fed by the Southern Ewaso Ng'iro River from central Kenya and by mineral-rich hot springs, and its temperatures often exceed 40°C. As the water evaporates, salt-loving cyanobacteria flourish, turning the open water deep red and the shallows orange.
Natron is the only regular breeding site in East Africa for some 2.5 million lesser flamingos – around 75% of the world's lesser flamingos are born here – which is why the species is classed as near threatened. Campgrounds near the lake make the perfect base for the climb.

Day02Arusha to Lake Natron via Mto wa Mbu
After a hearty breakfast your driver guide and chef collect you for the drive of about five hours to Ol Doinyo Lengai, with plenty to see along the way, including a stop at Mto wa Mbu.
Beyond, the road crosses open Maasai country where game grazes and herders roam with their cattle. You arrive around midday or early afternoon at your camp on the banks of the Engaresero River. Cool off with a shower or a dip in the river, or walk to the waterfalls hidden in the western wall of the Great Rift Valley. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day03Night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai
After tea and biscuits in the middle of the night, you drive to the base of the mountain, where the climb begins. Ol Doinyo Lengai rises to 3,188 m, east of the great Ngorongoro highlands and south of Lake Natron. It is not especially tall, but the ascent is steep and challenging – with your guide's support you will make it to the summit in around 5–6 hours.
At the top, take 20–45 minutes to soak up the breathtaking views over the Rift Valley and Lake Natron and take some magnificent photographs, before making your way back down to the base in 3–4 hours.
You then return to camp for a hot lunch, an afternoon of well-earned rest and the night by the river.

Day04Lake Natron flamingos and return to Arusha
After a hearty breakfast you visit Lake Natron, the famous breeding hub where lesser flamingos gather in their millions, and take in the eye-catching sights of this beautiful, harsh and caustic lake.
Back at camp by midday, you enjoy a hot lunch, collect your gear and drive about 4–5 hours back to Arusha. On the way you may choose to stop at a Maasai boma for a cultural visit, or at Meserani Snake Park to see snake species that are shy and hard to find in the wild. Overnight at your hotel in Arusha on a bed-and-breakfast basis.
