Gorilla & Primate Safaris

Mountain gorillas in Uganda, chimpanzees in Kibale, Mahale and Gombe: unforgettable encounters with our closest relatives.

Spending an hour with a family of mountain gorillas is one of the most moving wildlife experiences in the world. Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain, living in the forested volcanoes where Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo meet.

Our primate safaris combine gorilla trekking in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga with chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, or in Tanzania's remote Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

What to expect on a trek

  • An early briefing at the park headquarters, then a trek through the forest with rangers and trackers.
  • Treks last from one to several hours on steep, muddy trails, depending on where the family is.
  • Once you find the gorillas, you spend one hour with them, keeping a safe distance.
  • Porters can be hired to carry your bag and help you on the slopes, supporting local families.

Permits

Gorilla permits are limited each day and sell out months ahead in the busy seasons. We secure your permits as soon as your trip is confirmed. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still wondering about something? Our team in Arusha answers every message personally.

Uganda or Rwanda for gorillas?

Both are excellent. Uganda's permits cost less and its parks combine well with chimpanzees and savannah wildlife. Rwanda is closer to Kigali airport but its permits are much more expensive.

Can I combine gorillas with a Tanzania safari?

Yes. Fly from Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam to Entebbe or Kigali to add a gorilla trek before or after your safari.

What should I wear for gorilla trekking?

Long trousers and sleeves, waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket and garden gloves for gripping vegetation.
